Trequanda is an ancient and charming village located in the hills between the Chiana valley and the valley of the river Asso.
Surely the foundation of the place in Etruscan although his actual consolidation takes place during the Middle Ages, when the family Cacciaconti there is a castle built in a strategic location along the important road that crosses the town of Asciano, colleague the village of Chiusi to Siena.
Taking the road that leads to Trequanda through Asciano Siena, take the suggestive "Via Delle Crete." The sight that greets visitors at this juncture is touching and joins man to nature through a landscape framed by rolling hills and paths of cypress trees.
The hills in the immediate vicinity of the farm Poggiolo offer the possibility of beautiful walks, hiking excursions by mountain bike or running.
Upcoming Trequanda are Siena, Arezzo, Pienza, Montepulciano, Montalcino, Montichiello are just some of the wonderful places easily accessible from Trequanda, the area is also rich in medieval villages to discover.
Bagno Vignoni, famous since Roman times for its thermal baths of hot water "where summer and winter you can swim", Montalcino, famous worldwide for its wine "Brunello", and Pienza "city born from a thought of love and a dream of beauty "as Giovanni Pascoli wrote. Beyond these places you can easily reach Montepulciano, Montichiello, Castiglione d'Orcia, Rocca d'Orcia, Bagni San Filippo, Radicofani, Monte Follonico, the Abbey of Monte Oliveto and Antimo.
Other places of great scenic and architectural importance, such as Siena, Arezzo, Florence, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni and Castellina in Chianti are within easy reach in the day.
Among woods, vineyards and olive groves of the Tuscan countryside, 462 m. high, rises Trequanda. The etymology of the name, curious, whimsical, can only be supposed, perhaps it is to be found in the mythical Etruscan hero Tarkonte; remember the name actually "Tarquinia" name that, according to an original search of Don Alfredo Maroni, the colony would have been rising over the mountains trequandini, in Piazza di Siena: Sena Iulia Tarquinia. And of course the first inhabitants were the Etruscans who have left us the memory of himself in many names as Cennano or Sicille and precious relics: the chamber tomb with cinerary urns of Belsedere Trequanda, Etruscan inscription on the farm Blade Castelmuzio.
The name "Trequanda" hypotheses are followed: you could play with the Latin and assume a derivation from quandam Terram, a "certain" land, a particular land, isolated; or truce, this hypothesis is not supported by documents of truces made between armies, but plausible.
Then there is the possibility that the name echoes the number three: three were on the outskirts of the village, from which the "three looks"; there are three chalices of the coat of arms, however, too recent and therefore perhaps derived from the name itself.
After the Roman conquest of Etruria, succeed Lombards and the Franks.
Valuable information dating back to the centuries before 1200 were Archives of Arezzo, in whose diocese it belonged Trequanda, but in 1387 a fire destroyed much of the correspondence contained in it.
The little information we possess allow us to have an image of what could be our country in medieval times. Ruled before 1000 by Cacciaconti Berardenga, after 1200 was the fief of the Cacciaconti Scialenga, rich and powerful family of French origin. From documents of the thirteenth century is clear interference in the politics of the Republic of Siena Castle Trequanda: in 1271 the mayor of Siena Trequanda punish the inhabitants of which had hindered the work of a judge sent by the Powers. What privileges and concessions of the emperors Otto IV and Frederick II returns the name of the Cacciaconti, tied to the fate of Trequanda especially for the figure of the Blessed Bonizzella. In the war between Siena and Arezzo Trequanda sided with the latter, declaring thus also against Siena, an ally of the Florentines, and after the battle of Campaldino (1289), the Sienese government threatened to raze the castle rebel. Transfer from Cacciaconti to Franzesi Staggia in 1309 to 18,000 pounds, the castle finally passed under the Balzana Siena. In 1552 it became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. In 1774, an affiliate of the Podesta of Asciano Petroio and Montisi; Castelmuzio was joined the community in 1833. Nowadays the town of Trequanda belong the localities of Castelmuzio and Petroio two medieval villages that retain the charm of the past in the narrow cobbled streets, churches and palaces. Montisi came out in 1877.
Built on an Etruscan-Roman site, Petroio was almost entirely built of sandstone. The origin of the name could end up in Praetorian (from the Latin Praetorium), as is mentioned for the first time in a bubble in the annals Camaldolesi Consistory of 1180.
view Petroio But there is another probable hypothesis that claims the name to Etruscan Petruni. Was a fief of the Cacciaconti Scialenga, subjected, as Trequanda Petroio St. George authority of the City of Siena. Towards the end of the fourteenth century the castle will become a domain of the Salimbeni and then go back to Bandini Piccolomini under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Siena and remain there until 1552, and finally go to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The attentive visitor can not help but soak in the silent beauty of the old town, covered by forests and enriched by buildings of great historical and artistic value.
A Petroio is linked to the name of Brendan, aka Bartholomew Carosi. Singular ascetic, preacher and prophet of the fifteenth century, crossed his land with a skull, a crucifix and a lot, repeating slogans and prophecies yet mentioned by our people.
Mustia in the ninth century farmhouse once stood around the ancient church of S. Stefano in Cennano, beautiful early Christian Church of the seventh century, whose current structure dates from 1285.
Castelmuzio has the typical structure of the fortified castle; gently perched on a hill of tufa, has a circular and is surrounded by walls and ramparts. view Castelmuzio
In the papers of the status of Siena, the year 1213, the country appears with the name of Castel hub, perhaps derived from how the guard tower of the Palazzo Fratini, which from afar appeared, in fact, "severed".
It belonged to Cacciaconti, then from 1270 to the Republic of Siena in 1354 and the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena. Then dominated by Cocco Salimbeni Lord Tentennano and Piccolomini, was returned to Siena in 1552, after the conquest of the imperial troops of Ascanio della Cornia, and a few years later it was annexed to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany
Just before the door, still fitted with hinges and window slits, you can see, embedded in the wall, the stone on which rested and ate St. Bernardino of Siena on his visits to the community. The memories of the community are very related to friendship and the great saint of Siena, scourge of costumes and preacher excelled.
Castelmuzio is dominated by Mount Lecceto and overlooks the valley of the river Trove that offers visitors beautiful landscapes with thousands of chromatic effects data from the change of time and the seasons that come and woods, on fallow land and olive groves, to get lost on the horizon .
